The oldest and most organic form of advertising is, but of course, word of mouth. This method continues to be one of the most effective forms of marketing for a brand. But with the continued rise of the digital age, advertising has had to transform itself to reach customers in new ways, much like other industries modernized by tech.

Austin is home to a number of adtech companies and startups. If you're interested in joining a team revolutionizing the way brands connect with their audiences, here are five companies hiring across departments.

What they do: Founded in 2004, ActiveProspect's platforms help sales teams acquire real-time leads and opt-in email subscribers while adhering to suppression and consent lists. The foundation of their products, LeadConduit, enables users to build their own lead-flow systems for filtering, delivering, ranking and reporting of leads.

What they are looking for: All positions require self-starters. Developers should be able to work in a small team autonomously and have a willingness to learn new languages as the need arises. Designers should have a solid understanding of front-end technologies and be able to smoothly transition from high-level concepts into detailed design conversations regularly. Sales candidates should be highly motivated with one to three years experience in sales or lead generation, and product folks should be extremely organized with a seamless ability to break down steps into executable action items.

What they do: AdAction advertises via mobile apps by partnering with app developers, brands and publishers to position the ads in the spots that drive the most results. Their reporting reflects real-time successes of campaigns, and they also have a team dedicated to preventing fraud incidents. Launched in 2013, the company averages six million monthly app installs in over 180 countries.

What they are looking for: Strategists should be metric-driven, and solution-oriented with a proven understanding of digital, social and search marketing. Those interested in account management must be results-motivated with a positive attitude able to multi-task. Having a mobile, tech or digital media-related background is also a huge plus.

What they do: With a portfolio of clients that includes Toyota, AT&T, Keds, Skype and MSN, Drumroll is an engagement agency that optimizes each customer touch point throughout a customer's experience. Their brand extension services include customer journey architecture, a mix of digital and traditional advertising offerings, social media engagement and engagement analytics.

What they are looking for: Interested recruiters should be warm spirited, energetic, a solid communicator, and have over five years of recruiting experience. Dynamic creative and art directors candidates should have over seven years of experience in their relative fields. It is strongly preferred in both director roles if you have prior experience working with national brands.

What they do: Founded in 2005, OneSpot develops machine-learning digital content that personalizes its messages across e-mail, web, social and ads based on user history and preferences. Their clients include Whole Foods, Microsoft, Kraft, Chase, and Intel.

What they are looking for: In addition to strong design skills and five or more years of JavaScript experience, OneSpot is looking for team members that are curious, adaptive and deliver under minimal guidance. Bonus points go to candidates with a sense of humor and notable ping pong abilities.

What they do: Mobile app developer Phunware builds customized apps for their clients to better engage with customers and grow their brands. They created Multiscreen as a Service™ (MaaS), which is a fully integrated services platform that allows brands to connect with app users at any time.

What they are looking for: Mobile savvy product types with extensive experience in building and managing native iOS and Android app experiences for a variety of industries. Interested data scientists must hold a Ph.D or MS in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, a related field, or over three years of relevant experience as a data scientist in a business environment. For the new accountant role, candidates must have high energy with the ability to work independently and leverage prior operational and technical accounting expertise.
