Who We’re Looking For
“Innovative” and “disruptive” can be overused words. But at Bestow, it isn’t jargon, it’s an everyday rally cry. We are rewriting the rules of the 400-year-old, $7 trillion life insurance industry, serving communities who have been underserved in the past, and we believe the future is a bright one.
So, if you’re excited by the idea of building something from scratch, working at a mission-driven company and fundamentally shaking up an age-old industry, please read on.
As a Product Manager you are responsible for determining what we should build and why we should build it. You build deep product experience and use that experience to help Bestow make strategic product decisions. In addition you guide a product to successfully accomplish business goals.
There are four areas in which we hold product managers accountable.
Product Strategy
You are responsible for creating a product vision and strategy. You must clearly articulate the business value behind the product and each feature/release. You must work with engineering managers to understand the cost of each initiative. This information must then be used to prioritize building what’s most important.
Some activities you may perform include:
Create a prioritized product roadmap in accordance with company OKR’s;
Regularly conduct user and customer research to understand needs and validate ideas;
Participate in company-wide strategic planning
Product Features
You will prioritize features by making data-informed hypotheses to their expected value compared to expected development cost. This will require making difficult trade-off decisions based on the bandwidth of your design/engineering team.
You are responsible for creating detailed technical and user-experience requirements. This will be done by working closely with engineers and designers to ensure the form and fidelity of communication works best for them.
Some activities you may perform include:
Create feature one-pagers;
Create a product requirements document;
Ensure the team is defining non-functional requirements such as analytics, security, and scalability;
Make timely, informed decisions about what we build;
Communicate changes in scope.
Product Releases
You will work with the Engineering Manager and Technical Project Manager to plan what the team will deliver and the timeline for that delivery. You are responsible for defining what goes in individual releases. This will require coordination with various stakeholders such as Customer Service, Legal, Compliance, and Underwriting. This includes understanding cross-team dependencies and ensuring they get resolved. You are responsible for communicating status throughout the product development process.
Some activities you may perform include:
Facilitate release note creation and communicate new releases;
Work with engineering, TPM to define release milestones;
Drive cross-functional execution of projects in the product roadmap;
Regular communication of progress;
Manage and prioritize scope change and bugs along with feature development
Ideation
Bestow is uniquely positioned to create unique, innovative product ideas. Any Bestower could be the source of our next major breakthrough. However, these ideas must be managed and prioritized. You are responsible for owning this idea creation process. This includes generation, curation and eventual promotion to product features. You must ensure that Besties know how to contribute their ideas and communicate the status of those ideas as they are promoted (or we decide not to pursue them).

An Insider's view of Bestow

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The vibe can be hectic at times and mellow at others. I feel I am in the good company of others that are trying to create something significant; no one is ever too busy to allocate time in their day for your comments or concerns. I consider a good office atmosphere, one where healthy discourse is encouraged and Bestow Austin has it in spades.

Mikhail

Software Engineer

What makes someone successful on your team?

Success is delighting people in unexpected ways. For example, we had someone apply but wasn’t eligible. Our team researched a company that might fit their specific case and helped them apply even though it wasn’t with us! This person was literally brought to tears because they were so grateful. We made a difference for someone. That’s success.

Grant

Director, Customer Experience

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Engineers are most engaged when they have the autonomy to make decisions on how things get built. We provide an environment where they can propose ideas, validate them and safely get to production with minimal friction. We don't micromanage decisions. We give people freedom to bring their good ideas to reality.

Brian

Vp, Engineering

What does career growth look like on your team?

At Bestow, you are not only free to define your own career path, but encouraged to step outside the boundaries and think outside the box on a daily basis. There are no limits placed on your work and you are entrusted with the responsibility and freedom to identify what problems need to be solved and how to solve them.
